Welcome to Food Allergy Support Durham

Welcome! Food Allergy Support Durham is a local learning and support group for individuals and parents of children living with life threatening allergies who live in Durham, Ontario.

My name is Adele and I started this group in January 2016. My 3 year old son has severe allergies to peanuts, hazelnuts, dairy, egg, sesame and banana. Our journey started when he was just 4 weeks old with extreme eczema and irritability related to ingesting breast milk. We had our first visit to the Allergist at 6 months old and almost 3 years later we’re still learning as we go. Our next daunting adventure is sending him off to school this September!

A huge difference in my life as a mom of a food allergic kid was the discovery of the Toronto Food Allergy Support Group. By attending those meetings I have met friends going through similar experiences who I can chat with and know that they truly get it. These friendships have been invaluable to me this year.

The Toronto Group meets 5 times a year and they are amazing. They have guest speakers like nutritionists, allergists, chefs and discuss many helpful topics. My goal is to get a similar format up and running for us in Durham by the Fall of 2016. My first step is recruitment. I’ll be putting posters up in local Allergists offices, putting messages in local mom groups and metroland newspapers to try and spread the word. When we have a fair number of people joining this group and can get an idea of where most people are joining from in Durham I can organize our first meet-up.  In the mean time, we can use this space, email and facebook to discuss and share anything related to food allergies and the struggles/successes we face daily.

Topics I love to hear from others are allergy friendly products and where to find them in our area, allergy friendly recipes, attending daycare/school, traveling with allergies…I could go on.

I’m looking forward to chatting with you!

Adele
